Glutamic acid, one of the components of MSG, occurs naturally in many foods, such as tomatoes, mushrooms, and soy sauce. It is an essential amino acid and a normal component of human protein.

MSG is highly versatile and can be used in various forms, such as a seasoning, a flavor enhancer, or a component of sauces and condiments. It can be added to multiple dishes, from soups and stir-fries to snacks and sauces, making it a valuable ingredient in Asia Pacific cuisine. According to the Australian Trade and Investment Commission, Chinese pet food imports grew from 9,813MT in 2016 to 97,560MT in 2021. By 2025, the value of China's pet food industry is expected to exceed US$16 billion. The growing pet food industry in China has driven the demand for MSG as a flavor enhancer and nutritional component in pet food products.
